I rediscovered a childhood passion the last few years: embroidery, needlework and knitting. Though it seems old-fashioned, relatively un-hip and potential mortal from a social standing and modern perspective. It speaks to me. I was always mesmerized by the beauty that can be created "by the touch of a master's hand" with simple tools such as needles and thread. The breadth of embroidery is awe inspiring and its global influence in daily life, cultural customs, memorable events, fashion, design and interiors could keep me talking for much longer. But instead, I'll leave you with some of my favorite designers and makers from the web.
1. Trish Burr: an Australian embroidery expert specializing in needlepoint painting. Her images are so life-like they resemble an Aubodon, her colours so rich and detail so fine that they make you think of a degournay master at work. Look, admire and take a peak at her heavenly website.
2. Purl Soho: Beautiful modern, heirloom quality tutorials, materials and ideas. This blog and shop is treasure for the modern mum, sister, friend, homemaker, girlfriend etc. A mix of natural fibers and colours, with vibrant, often tone on tone colour ways makes you want to do every project. I made a loverly pair of mittens, a number of sweet hats for my own and friends children. What a joy to knit, while you image the cozy snowy november mornings, the skating Sundays at the park and warm coco dates that follow.
3. Olga Prinku: a designer and maker who specializes in dried flowers on tulle embroidery. Absolutely stunning images and beautiful objects on her website. She has tutorials (both free and available for purchase). Another modern, heirloom quality project, anyone?
