courage and the family jewels

My parents were visiting India and what memories, smells, flavours and joy does that spark. When they were dating, my father bought a beautiful pair of earrings for my mother at a shop in the Mumbai neighbourhoods. Many years later, I returned to the same shop with them and found beautiful pieces that I use both in the country and overseas. These jewels and others that have been gifted on important occasions and are reminders of loved ones on a day-to-day basis; the tennis bracelet from my uncle when I graduated from high school. A sapphire solitaire and studs for my 16th birthday, a Roots watch from my grandfather when I got acceptance to medical school, little diamond studs on my wedding day. These mementos were never extravagant, but always marked the occasion. But more importantly, they are reminders of the love, acceptance and unconditional support of my family in all of my endevours. Perhaps it will help you, I know it helps me. Find courage in your momentos, whatever they may be. Sometimes it's the little things that make the difference.
